Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms : Proceedings of the International Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, 2001

Description

The first ICANNGA conference, devoted to biologically inspired computational paradigms, Neural Net- works and Genetic Algorithms, was held in Innsbruck, Austria, in 1993. The meeting attracted researchers from all over Europe and further afield, who decided that this particular blend of topics should form a theme for a series of biennial conferences. The second meeting, held in Ales, France, in 1995, carried on the tradition set in Innsbruck of a relaxed and stimulating environment for the. exchange of ideas. The series has continued in Norwich, UK, in 1997, and Portoroz, Slovenia, in 1999. The Institute of Computer Science, Czech Academy of Sciences, is pleased to host the fifth conference in Prague. We have chosen the Liechtenstein palace under the Prague Castle as the conference site to enhance the traditionally good atmosphere of the meeting. There is an inspirational genius loci of the historical center of the city, where four hundred years ago a fruitful combination of theoretical and empirical method, through the collaboration of Johannes Kepler and Tycho de Brahe, led to the discovery of the laws of planetary orbits.

- classic black-and-white comic book artwork throughout Enter The Zone Files -- the official Dr Barry Sears site. Only a young boy named Hogarth is brave enough to lead the Iron Giant to a safe home. And only Hogarth knows where to turn when a space-bat as big as Australia, hungry for every living thing on Earth, darkens the sky. New York Times and New Yorker illustrator Jillian Tamaki is best known for co-creating the award-winning young adult graphic novels Skim and This One Summer -- moody and atmospheric bestsellers. SuperMutant Magic Academy, which Jillian has been serializing online for the past four years, paints a teenaged world filled with just as much ennui and uncertainty, but also with a sharp dose of humor and irreverence. Jillian deftly plays superhero and high school Hollywood tropes against what adolescence is really like: the SuperMutant Magic Academy is Artificial Neural Nets and Genetic Algorithms : Proceedings of the International Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, 2001 free pdf a prep-school for mutants and witches but their paranormal abilities take a back seat to everyday teen concerns. Science experiments go awry, bake sales are upstaged, and the new kid at school is a cat who will determine the course of human destiny. In one strip, lizard-headed Trixie frets about her non-existent modeling career; in another the immortal Everlasting Boy tries to escape this mortal coil to no avail. Throughout it all, closeted Marsha obsesses about her unrequited crushee, the cat-eared Wendy. Whether the magic is mundane or miraculous, Jillian's jokes are precise and devastating.

Design for AT-Speed Test, Diagnosis and Measurement

Description

Design for AT-Speed Test, Diagnosis and Measurement is the first book to offer practical and proven design-for-testability (DFT) solutions to chip and system design engineers, test engineers and product managers at the silicon level as well as at the board and systems levels. Designers will see how the implementation of embedded test enables simplification of silicon debug and system bring-up. Test engineers will determine how embedded test provides a superior level of at-speed test, diagnosis and measurement without exceeding the capabilities of their equipment. Product managers will learn how the time, resources and costs associated with test development, manufacture cost and lifecycle maintenance of their products can be significantly reduced by designing embedded test in the product. A complete design flow and analysis of the impact of embedded test on a design makes this book a `must read' before any DFT is attempted.

Triumphs of Experience

Description

At a time when people are living into their tenth decade, the longest longitudinal study of human development ever undertaken offers welcome news for old age: our lives evolve in our later years and often become more fulfilling. Among the surprising findings: people who do well in old age did not necessarily do so well in midlife, and vice versa.

In the sibling relationship, "there are no first impressions, no seductions, no getting to know each other," says Denise Kranis. For Denise and her brother, Nik, now in their forties, no relationship is more significant. They grew up in Los Angeles in the late seventies and early eighties. Virginia Woolf,Quentin Bell,Claudia Olk: The Charleston Bulletin Supplements

The Charleston Bulletin Supplements

Description

In the summer of 1923 Virginia Woolf's nephews, Quentin and Julian Bell, started a family newspaper, The Charleston Bulletin. Quentin decided to ask his aunt Virginia for a contribution: 'it seemed stupid to have a real author so close at hand and not have her contribute.' Woolf joined forces with Quentin, and from 1923 until 1927 they created fully-fledged booklets of stories and drawings that were announced as Supplements. Written or dictated by Woolf and illustrated by Quentin, these Supplements present a unique collaboration between the novelist during her most prolific years and the child-painter. In Virginia Woolf, Quentin Bell not only found a professional author and an experienced journalist, but, above all, a close companion and conspirator who shared his irreverence and mischievous sense of humour. The Supplements are transcribed in full here for the first time alongside around 40 of Bell's original illustrations. Designed to tease the adults, they portray Bloomsbury eccentricities along with the foibles and mishaps of the residents and visitors at Charleston. This is the first time the Supplements have been published since they were first written and will therefore be welcomed by fans of Woolf and her circle.

Nominated for the Best Fiction for Young Adults 2013 Meet the ladies: a flock of smart, affectionate, highly individualistic chickens who visit their favorite neighbors, devise different ways to hide from foxes, and mob the author like she s a rock star. In these pages you ll also meet Maya and Zuni, two orphaned baby hummingbirds who hatched from eggs the size of navy beans, and who are little more than air bubbles fringed with feathers. Their lives hang precariously in the balance but with human help, they may one day conquer the sky. Snowball is a cockatoo whose dance video went viral on YouTube and who s now teaching schoolchildren how The Charleston Bulletin Supplements download ebook pdf to dance. You ll meet Harris s hawks named Fire and Smoke. And you ll come to know and love a host of other avian characters who will change your mind forever about who birds really are. Each of these birds shows a different and utterly surprising aspect of what makes a bird a bird and these are the lessons of Birdology that birds are far stranger, more wondrous, and at the same time more like us than we might have dared to imagine. In Birdology, beloved author of The Good Good Pig Sy Montgomery explores the essence of the otherworldly creatures we see every day. By way of her adventures with seven birds wild, tame, exotic, and common she weaves new scientific insights and narrative to reveal seven kernels of bird wisdom. The first lesson of Birdology is that, no matter how common they are, Birds Are Individuals, as each of Montgomery s distinctive Ladies clearly shows. In the leech-infested rain forest of Queensland, you ll come face to face with a cassowary a 150-pound, man-tall, flightless bird with a helmet of bone on its head and a slashing razor-like toenail with which it (occasionally) eviscerates people proof that Birds Are Dinosaurs. You ll learn from hawks that Birds Are Fierce; from pigeons, how Birds Find Their Way Home; from parrots, what it means that Birds Can Talk; and from 50,000 crows who moved into a small city s downtown, that Birds Are Everywhere. They are the winged aliens who surround us. Birdology explains just how very "other" birds are: Their hearts look like those of crocodiles. They are covered with modified scales, which are called feathers. Their bones are hollow. Their bodies are permeated with extensive air sacs. They have no hands. They give birth to eggs. Yet despite birds and humans disparate evolutionary paths, we share emotional and intellectual abilities that allow us to communicate and even form deep bonds. When we begin to comprehend who birds really are, we deepen our capacity to approach, understand, and love these otherworldly creatures. And this, ultimately, is the priceless lesson of Birdology it communicates a heartfelt fascination and awe for birds and restores our connection to these complex, mysterious fellow creatures."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,Ed Glinert,Iain Sinclair: A Study in Scarlet

A Study in Scarlet

Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet is the literary debut of the world's most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, introduced by Iain Sinclair with notes by Ed Glinert in Penguin Classics. Convalescing in London after a disastrous experience of war in Afghanistan, Dr John Watson finds himself sharing rooms with his enigmatic new acquaintance, Sherlock Holmes. But their quiet bachelor life at 221B Baker Street is soon interrupted by the grisly discovery of a dead man in a grimy 'ill-omened' house in south-east London, his face contorted by an expression of horror and hatred such as Watson has never seen before. On the wall, the word rache - German for 'revenge' - is written in blood, yet there are no wounds on the victim or signs of a struggle. Watson's head is in a whirl, but the formidable Holmes relishes this challenge to his deductive powers, and so begins their famous investigative partnership. In his introduction, Iain Sinclair discusses the links between Sherlock Holmes mysteries and the Jack the Ripper murders, Conan Doyle's narrative style and his depiction of London. This edition also includes further reading, a chronology and notes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh where he qualified as a doctor, but it was his writing which brought him fame, with the creation of Sherlock Holmes, the first scientific detective. He was also a social reformer who used his investigative skills to prove the innocence of individuals. Iain Sinclair is the author of Downriver (winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Encore Award), and his latest book Ghost Milk: Calling Time on the Grand Project is published by Penguin. Ed Glinert writes a regular column for Time Out magazine, and is the author of The Literary Guide to London. Glinert's latest book, The London Compendium, is published by Penguin. If you liked A Study in Scarlet you might enjoy The Hound of the Baskervilles, also available in Penguin Classics.

Laurie Graham: The Importance of Being Kennedy

The Importance of Being Kennedy

Description

A brilliant novel by Laurie Graham set in wartime London, which follows Kick Kennedy, sister of future US President JFK, as she takes London society by storm. Nora Brennan is a country girl from Westmeath. When she lands herself a position as nursery maid to a family in Brookline, Massachusetts, she little thinks it will place her at the heart of American history. But it's the Kennedy family. In 1917 Joseph Kennedy is on his way to his first million and he has plans to found a dynasty and ensure that his baby son, Joe Junior, will be the first Catholic President of the United States. As nursemaid to all nine Kennedy children, Nora witnesses every moment, public and private. She sees the boys coached at their father's knee to believe everything they'll ever want in life can be bought. She sees the girls trained by their mother to be good Catholic wives. World War II changes everything. At the outbreak of war the Kennedys are living the high life in London, where Joseph Kennedy is the American ambassador. His reaction is to send the entire household back across the Atlantic to safety, but Nora, surprised by midlife love, chooses to stay in England and do her bit. Separated from her Kennedys by an ocean she nevertheless remains the warm, approachable sun around which the older children orbit: Joe, Jack, Rosemary, and in particular Kick, who throws the first spanner in the Kennedy works by marrying an English Protestant. Laurie Graham's poignant new novel views the Kennedys from below stairs, with the humour and candour that only an ex-nursemaid dare employ.

Let There Be Water illustrates how Israel can serve as a model for the United States and countries everywhere by showing how to blunt the worst of the coming water calamities. Even with 60 percent of its country made of desert, Israel has not only solved its water problem; it also had an abundance of water. Israel even supplies water to its neighbors-the Palestinians and the Kingdom of Jordan-every day. Simon Malpas investigates the theories and definitions of postmodernism and postmodernity, and explores their impact in such areas as identity, history, art, literature and culture. In attempting to map the different forms of the postmodern, and the contrasting experiences of postmodernity in the Western and developing worlds, he looks closely at: * modernism and postmodernism * modernity and postmodernity * subjectivity * history * politics. This useful guidebook will introduce students to a range of key thinkers who have sought to question the contemporary situation, and The Importance of Being Kennedy free ebook will enable readers to begin to approach the primary texts of postmodern theory and culture with confidence.

This title is presented with an introduction by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. "The Last Expedition" is Captain Scott's gripping account of his expedition to the South Pole in 1910-12. It was meant to be a voyage of scientific discovery and a heroic exploration of the last unconquered wilderness. Scott's expedition, carried in the Terra Nova, pitted him and his team not only against the elements but also against the Norwegian explorer, Amundsen. Ultimately, Scott was beaten by both. The journals are full of incident and drama, courage and endurance, hope and bitter disappointment. These journals were found, along with Scott's body, several months after his death and just 11 miles from base camp and safety. Slam Dunk, Volume 16 free pdf In an era of raging commoditization and eroding profit margins, survival depends on resilience: staying one step ahead of your customers. Sure, most companies say they're "customer-focused," but they don't deliver solutions to customers' thorniest problems. Why? Because they're stymied by the rigid "silos" they're organized around. In Reorganize for Resilience, Ranjay Gulati reveals how resilient companies prosper both in good times and bad, driving growth and increasing profitability by immersing themselves in the lives of their customers. This book shows how resilient organizations cut through internal barriers that impede action, build bridges between warring divisions, and transform former competitors into collaborators. Based on more than a decade of research in a variety of industries, and filled with examples from companies including Cisco Systems, La Farge, Starbucks, Best Buy, and Jones Lang LaSalle, Gulati exploresthe five levers of resilience: * Coordination: Connect, eradicate, or restructure silos to enable swift responses. * Cooperation: Foster a culture that aligns all employees around the shared goals of customer solutions.

Euripides,Anne Carson: Grief Lessons: Four Plays

Grief Lessons: Four Plays

Description

Now in paperback. Euripides, the last of the three great tragedians of ancient Athens, reached the height of his renown during the disastrous Peloponnesian War, when democratic Athens was brought down by its own outsized ambitions. Euripides, the classicist Bernard Knox has written, was born never to live in peace with himself and to prevent the rest of mankind from doing so. His plays were shockers: he unmasked heroes, revealing them as foolish and savage, and he wrote about the powerless women and children, slaves and barbarians for whom tragedy was not so much exceptional as unending. Euripides plays rarely won first prize in the great democratic competitions of ancient Athens, but their combustible mixture of realism and extremism fascinated audiences throughout the Greek world. In the last days of the Peloponnesian War, Athenian prisoners held captive in far-off Sicily were said to have won their freedom by reciting snatches of Euripides latest tragedies. Four of those tragedies are presented here in new translations by the contemporary poet and classicist Anne Carson. They are "Herakles," in which the hero swaggers home to destroy his own family; "Hekabe," set after the Trojan War, in which Hektor s widow takes vengeance on her Greek captors; "Hippolytos," about love and the horror of love; and the strange tragic-comedy fable "Alkestis," which tells of a husband who arranges for his wife to die in his place. The volume also contains brief introductions by Carson to each of the plays along with two remarkable framing essays: Tragedy: A Curious Art Form and Why I Wrote Two Plays About Phaidra. "

This book provides the first comprehensive guide to the practice of "enhanced" cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E), the latest version of the leading empirically supported treatment for eating disorders. Written with the practitioner in mind, the book demonstrates how this transdiagnostic approach can be used with the full range of eating disorders seen in clinical practice. Christopher Fairburn and colleagues describe in detail how to tailor CBT-E to the needs of individual patients, and how to adapt it for adolescents and patients who require hospitalization. Also addressed are frequently encountered co-occurring disorders and how to manage them. Reproducible appendices feature the Eating Disorder Examination interview and questionnaire. * Looking for a guide focused on Cape Town? Spiritual Unfoldment: How to Discover the Inner Worlds and Find the Source of Healing v. 1

Description

'A time will come when your innermost voice will speak to you, saying 'This is my path, here I shall find peace, I will pursue this path, come what may' If you will persist and are patient, and above all never lose faith, your path will lead you unerringly to your goal' White Eagle's earliest programmes for his students at the White Eagle Lodge included classes on spiritual unfoldment. The subject included training in clairvoyance (real clear seeing, for instance on the true nature of the person, not shallow prediction), meditation, right living, learning about the great laws of life such as reincarnation and karma and about healing. Spiritual Unfoldment 1 is compiled largely from teachings at those classes given over many years. It will lead the seeker down the first roads upon a path of absolute simplicity-but the truest path is also the simplest. Carefully revised and with a new introduction, this edition brings a classic book to the forefront, before a whole new generation of spiritual seekers.
